Fisher Farm & Lawn HILLSBORO
HILLSBORO FISHER FARM & LAWN-COMMITTED TO MEETING THE CHANGING NEEDS OF ITS CUSTOMERS FOR OVER 70 YEARS

The John Deere Company was first represented in Hillsboro by Lester Ireland and the Ireland Hardware Store. The store was located on Third and Main Streets. In 1938 Roy Hofer was hired as a serviceman for Ireland Hardware Store. He recalls that most equipment sales were made through the John Deere catalog at that time, and the John Deere showroom was simply a spot in the store where they parked a tractor. The service department was located in the rear of the building and accessed by exiting a door at the rear of the store and walking through Picken’s Blacksmith Shop.

Ireland sold his store around 1940, and it was renamed Hillsboro Implement Company. Various partners were involved over the years, with the primary partners being Roy Hofer, Cliff Cornut, Dave Edwards, Sr., Dave Edwards, Jr., and Hap Vandehey. These partners saw the Hillsboro community change from a small community of primarily dairy, row crop, and wheat farmers to an urban suburb with major electronics-related industries. This shift in demographics brought about a shift in sales, and Hillsboro Implement became the region’s largest dealer of consumer products—small tractors and equipment for landscaping and care of large properties.

In 1990 Fisher Implement Company purchased the store. With the resources of the Fisher Implement Company available, the Hillsboro store was able to fully meet the needs of both its agricultural and consumer customers.

The year 2008 was another landmark year for the store as the store underwent an expansion and remodeling project, giving them a bright, well-merchandised showroom. In addition, the service department gained 2,880 square feet of space, allowing all service facilities to be under one roof, in a more customer-friendly environment. In acknowledgement of the expanding hobby farm and grounds care market, in that year they also, along with the other Fisher Implement stores, donned a new name--Fisher Farm & Lawn.
