Improving Threshing Performance in Hard Threshing / White Cap Wheat Conditions


Symptoms In tough-threshing wheat, white caps accumulate in the grain tank.


Solution Steps Inspect Separator Inspect the entire separator for excessive wear. Worn parts will affect the combine's ability to properly thresh the crop and move material through the machine. Replace any parts that show excessive wear.


Re-level and Zero Concaves As conditions warrant tighter concave clearances, it is important to have a level concave. Refer to Section 90 of the operator's manual for complete instructions on leveling a concave. Once the concave is level, calibrate the concave position sensor so the readings on the cornerpost accurately reflect the actual setting.


Adjust Feed Accelerator Speed Operating the feed accelerator at slow speed may help to hold the head of the wheat to the stalk for better threshing. If conditions are tough, it may be necessary to run the feed accelerator at high speed for optimum material handling.


Install Concave Cover Plates Cover plates are available from your John Deere dealer that will cover the concave, forcing material to stay in the separator longer.


Calibrate Chaffer and Sieve Refer to Section 90 of the STS operator's manual for chaffer and sieve calibration procedures. Once the shoe is calibrated, the numbers on the indicator will be more accurate and allow for more accurate settings.
